I originally started off teaching seniors. I received a grant many moons ago I from Walmart, which was a community action project grant that allowed me to work with seniors in senior centers. And my mission at that time was better use of dance for patients that are suffering from Parkinson's or Alzheimer's. My grandmother died from Alzheimer's disease and I have an uncle that's been diagnosed with Parkinson's for many years, which led me to do a little more studies into the relations between dance and the body, the memory and all that. So again, that's how I first received the grant to work with seniors in these spaces. After that, I kind of branched off to working with children. I started at Jersey City Public Library in, I think that was about 20 12, 20 13. I can double check the date, but I started doing programs at Five Corners for their young readers and their toddler programs. So from there I started at Five Corners, and then I went over to Miller Branch where I did a teen program that incorporated young girls and boys, and we focused on African rhythms.","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://jclibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3515/collection_resources/163062/file/296974#t=121.0,214.0"},{"id":"https://jclibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3515/collection_resources/163062/file/296974/transcript/86672/annotation/7","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"KT: So connecting to the drum, learning your history, learning about your body, which was just a major turning point in my career as a dance educator. I then began to realize that dance was serving a bigger purpose. It was forming community. So I had girls in my class that were already taking ballet or some other form of dance, and then I started to have guys in my class that maybe was the football player, but they were curious to know or they passed by and heard the music. And then before you know it, I had a class full of teenagers. So we did a few projects over there with them, and then it just kept going and I kept going wherever the library needed me. Along with that, like I said, I worked in the public school system in Newark for many years doing their theater and dance education programs for summer throughout the year after school as well. I also shifted again there because I started to realize that yes, dance was a sense of community with theater and all, but there was a bigger problem with our children and their literacy","format":"text/plain"},"target":"https://jclibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3515/collection_resources/163062/file/296974#t=214.0,286.0"},{"id":"https://jclibrary.aviaryplatform.com/collections/3515/collection_resources/163062/file/296974/transcript/86672/annotation/8","type":"Annotation","motivation":"transcribing","body":{"type":"TextualBody","value":"KT: Keeping up with school. So I began working with the teachers there to just see, Hey, what are you focusing on? Are we learning the Times table? Okay, how can I incorporate that into a fun dance freeze with the kids? How do I get them involved and excited about reading and spelling at the same time doing Shene turns and balancing on one foot and getting the rhythms right. So I started combining dance history with current dance moves of social dance and then taking the lessons that the teachers were having. Maybe they were struggling with spelling or reading and hitting clues into the movements to how we practiced, how we started class with grace and reverence and things like that. So again, the sense of community grew even deeper to, I found myself at birthday parties for some of my students, just showing up for them in ways that maybe their family members couldn't do or adding more community to them and more support, making sure that I'm providing them space to express themselves, but at the same time, to evolve and grow. And so they bought me in to help start their STEAM program, which was originally going to be a STEM program. But after conversations, we realized that art was a major aspect in it, and so we combined science with dance. We took step routines and combined that with math engineering. I had students come in and paint backdrops, bur morals and things like that, create their own, set their stage, write their scripts, which also helped boost the whole literacy with 'em. So for anyone, of course, you might be a little standoffish or reserved in the beginning, but it became that safe space to make all the mistakes. I find my students constantly asking me as a native, does this work like this as a native, how would you go about doing it? Today we were having conversations about small talk, just elevator talk, and they're like, I didn't mean to be rude. They just said, how you doing? And they left. I was like, oh, well, Americans love the small talk. That's just another way that we greet. Yes. Alright, can everybody just stand up, take space, move around, get familiar, do what feels good for your body. If you need to jump up and down, jump up and down. If you need to exhale, let it out. If you need to shout a little bit, go ahead and shout whatever it is, you're in this space, this is yours for the next two hours, fill it out. Congratulations. You made it to class and we're going to have a great class. Our quote is, sometimes it will be, can anyone tell me what this word means in our sentence? Neighborhood? What does neighborhood mean? That went great, but I did a game, so I was like, you guys have a minute on the clock. Alright, you're going to come up with as many compound ounces as you can imagine. All 1, 2, 3. And I looked over at both groups and I'm like, there's only 10. Oh guys, this is so common. You're thinking too hard. I looked at one group, I said, we have a room bedroom. And it's so very true. And being from Jersey City, I was able to experience that. I've had best friends from all around the world, almost all around the world. And I used to tell people a lot of times growing up downtown, Jersey City, Spanish was a very prominent language here. And it was, you might go to the bodega and you don't even know Bueno papi. Oh, what's going on? Oh, yeah, can I get a butter roll? And before you know it, they're joking back and forth, and you're building all of this, and you're like, oh yeah, I know a few words. My mom went out and found ballet teachers, found TaeKwonDo teachers found different types of resources for the young kids there that we didn't have in the beginning. And my first recital, I still remember being in the gym really late at night as a kid, you're at school and it's seven o'clock, what's going on here? My mom was hand making tutu's. When she walks in there with her little feet, she's excited to see her teachers. She's excited to pick up books. And I feel like not enough people know that about the library, that they offer all these opportunities for advancement, for security, for growth. And it starts when they're babies and it goes all the way up to senior programs that they have, senior activities that they have. My mother-in-law takes advantage of their programs. My mom has done their typing classes. And those are different generations that are all taking advantage of this opportunity that we have here. So that's awesome. And I really hope that we keep going with it and we are stronger with it. I hope people tend to take advantage of it. Again, with a sense of security and growth. I'm trying to make sure that my place along their journey is valuable and impactful, and I'm teaching grammar, but at the same time, I'm teaching them how to make new connections. Alright, you trust me enough on your journey to share your personal information. Let's do a little role plan. Let's map out how this conversation's going to go. Let's role play it a little bit. And again, if you don't have the confidence, I'm here to help. I can get on the phone real quick, but as a teacher, as a part of your growth, as would love to hear you do this. So that's where I am at this point. I hope I can continue to do this with ESL. Like I said, I want to get deeper into using art as prompts in my grammar sessions and things like that and exploring more. I would love to do more field trips and not so much always a museum, but maybe different areas of Jersey City. Jersey City has a lot of history, period, and we have historic buildings that are still here, hence St. Peter's Grammar School. That as an outsider, learning about your new community, this is fascinating. I know when I travel on vacation, I want to know everything about the area I'm staying in.
